Well, more like the US has largely Forgotten what war is like, partly due to history being taught so poorly or not at all here. We knew at several points, during the Revolution, the Civil War and WWI at least. WWII didn't hit the mainland US directly nearly at all, so it ~felt more like a continuation of the recovery from the Great Depression than a war to many folks. Although, on the Southern East coast a lot of ships were sunk within sight of shore in the early 1940s.
You would think that after Vietnam was so heavily reported on TV, people Might have retained some clue ... but that was decades past, I guess. The ever more gory, ugly news stories are one reason I can't stand to watch TV anymore and therefore don't own one.
I had several relatives in WWII and Vietnam as well as numerous friends and acquaintances over the years who have been in and around the military, Special Forces and various ~agencies, so perhaps I have a better idea of such things than most.
